COMMITTEE CHARGE

The 30th May 4 Commemoration Committee includes 35 members of the faculty, staff, community and student body. Dr. Richard A. Bredemeier, emeritus vice president for enrollment management and student affairs, and Dr. John R. Jameson, chair of the department of history, are the co-chairs. The committee is charged as follows:

To develop programs for the 30th May 4 Commemoration which place this historic event in the life of the Kent State University and the nation within the broader context of the democratic values that are the foundation of American society. To develop a theme around which organizations and departments can plan programs and activities that engage the community in democratic debate and civil discourse.

The goals of the committee are to:

  • exercise sensitivity to the families of the slain and wounded students in developing and coordinating programming;
  • encourage all members of the university community to develop programs and activities that reflect the commemoration theme;
  • coordinate an academic symposium focusing on democratic values and democracy for a new millennium during the week of May 4, 2000.

The 30th May 4 Commemoration Committee will coordinate and schedule programming throughout spring semester 2000. The annual candlelight walk and vigil on May 3 and 4 and the program at noon on May 4, 2000, will be organized by the May 4 Task Force student organization.

Through the Office of the President, the committee is able to offer individuals and organizations the opportunity to apply for program funding. Applications for 30th May 4 Commemoration grants will be available in the Department of History, 305 Bowman Hall, or online at http://www.kent.edu/30YearMay4 after Sept. 15, 1999.
