Jazz and the American Century:
Using Popular Music as a Primary Source
In the Humanities and Social Sciences Classroom
Summer Institute for Teacher’s in Humanities
June 21 – 26, 2009
Application Deadline May 1, 2009
Jazz is a distinctly American music made popular through the intersection of politics, economics, and culture. Beginning near the start of the twentieth-century, the history of this popular American musical form in many ways mirrors the history of the United States. Jazz and the American Century will introduce concepts and ideas regarding popular music as a primary source document, engage the participants in discussions related to bringing Jazz into the classroom as a means to enhance student engagement, and help develop humanities-based curricular models using popular music as a primary source. Through the use of primary source documents, presentations by resident scholars, and a visit to the Rock Hall of Fame, the participants will come to see Jazz beyond its musical incarnations and understand its interconnection to the larger humanities. Each day will begin with a discussion of the previous day’s presentations, followed by a new assignment, lecture, or film. After lunch, the participants will regroup for continued presentations and discussions, as well as research and design opportunities. Evenings will be reserved for reading and other activities, except for Thursday evening when a night out (for those interested) to hear live Jazz will be featured. By the end of the week, each teacher will be ready to present how the information garnered could be integrated into a classroom lesson, objective, or perhaps as an in service for other teachers. Several weeks before the Institute, participants will receive a copy of Ted Gioia’s The History of Jazz with an outline of required readings. The participants can choose housing in air-conditioned dormitory suites located on the Kent State University campus at $36.85 per night or $184.25 for the full week. The Institute will take place in the Kent State Library Media room (122). The participants can choose to register for “Jazz and the American Century” to earn three hours of graduate credit – the OHC and KSU will cover two-thirds of the cost. Total cost per participant: with housing and graduate credit - $638; with just graduate credit - $454; with neither housing nor graduate credit - $0.
