INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS

The University's service and support divisions will further
develop a strong internal communications system through publications,
correspondence, and innovative use of new communications
technology. Such a system will increase the quality, relevance, and
user-friendly nature of information available to students, faculty, and staff
members. A clearer articulation of University goals and objectives will
enable more effective and meaningful dialogue. This improved two-way
communication is intended to foster a genuine sense of community, as has
been identified as a major initiative in Part I of the Strategic Plan.

Specific emphases will include the following:

A systematic review of the style, content, and scope
of the Inside faculty/staff newsletter and other
internal publications to maximize responsiveness to
faculty and staff concerns, and to help ensure that
recognition is given as often as possible.

Efforts to assure meaningful participation in
                         University decision-making through appropriate
representation of staff members on committees and
                         other groups.

Programs to extend understanding of workplace
                         processes, group dynamics, and goal-setting.

The development of a systematic and
                         comprehensive University communication plan
targeted to improve the scope, speed, and depth of
communications among all members of the
                         University community.

                   Improving the effectiveness, cost-competitiveness,
and turnaround time of campus publications by
completing an assessment of production resources
and developing practical guidelines for determining
when it is appropriate to assign a project to a
                         commercial vendor.
