PHYSICAL RESOURCES

A well-developed and maintained physical plant is necessary to
support the overall mission of the University, as well as the specific
missions and needs of individual departments and programs. The Space
Allocation Advisory Committee meets regularly to ensure that the
University's physical resources are developed in accordance with the
mission and goals of the University, particularly the priorities outlined in
Part I of the Strategic Plan. Facility projects are funded through local
funds, bond receipts, and State of Ohio capital appropriations. Major
projects require the Ohio Board of Regents' approval and are typically
     reviewed on a biennial cycle.

In addition to ongoing projects to maintain and adapt existing
physical plant facilities, the following are examples of major projects
planned for implementation during the next three to five years:

LCI/Materials Science Building. A new building
of 77,750 gross square feet to house a Materials
Science instructional program, the Glenn H. Brown
Liquid Crystal Institute, and associated research
                         centers.

Fiber Optics Network. A comprehensive data and
                         communication networking plan linking all
                         locations on the Kent Campus.

                   Moulton Hall Renovation Project. The
complete rehabilitation of Moulton Hall for the
establishment of a first-class center for instructional
technology and distance learning. It will be
                         designed expressly to showcase state-of-the-art
educational technology in use and will be supported
by an integrated, comprehensive cabling system
which enables voice, video, and data
communication within the building and among the
building and remote locations. The renovated
building will also house the offices of University
Development and the Kent State University
                         Foundation, Inc.

Parking Facilities. Factors which can help to
reduce contention for a limited number of spaces
                         will be carefully examined.

Infrastructure. There will be a keen emphasis on
the repair, maintenance, and rehabilitation of
facilities, roads, tunnels, systems, and larger
                         equipment.

Stark Science Center. Currently in the planning
phase, Kent State Stark Campus and Stark
Technical College will pursue a joint venture in the
construction of a shared facility to address the
academic needs of Biology, Chemistry, Physics,
                         Geology, and Health Sciences.
