Entrance Requirements, Enrollment and Admission

To obtain a B.S. in translation, undergraduate students must apply at Kent State University www.admissions.kent.edu/ and fulfill the requirements for the B.S

To be considered for acceptance in the M.A. Program in translation, the student must complete an application for graduate admission; forms are available at  http://www.kent.edu/rags/GraduateStudies/Graduate-Admissions.cfm and fulfill the entrance requirements in the M.A. in Translation.

To be considered for acceptance in the M.A. Program in translation, the student must:

  • Have a 3.0 or higher GPA in all undergraduate work;
  • Meet all of the requirements for admission to graduate study as set by the university;
  • If the candidate is a foreign student, submit TOEFL scores with 525 or higher (Written test) or 197 or higher (Computerized test), or another certification of English proficiency acceptable to the college;
  • Have two sets of official transcripts sent from each college or university attended;
  • Submit a 5-7 minute oral statement of purpose (tape/CD) in a second language. International students should submit two oral statements: one in English and one in the foreign language for which they are applying;
  • Submit a writing sample of at least 250 words in the foreign language chosen by the applicant. The essay should describe the student's experience in the foreign language. International students should submit two writing samples: one in English and one in the foreign language for which they are applying. The writing sample should be accompanied by a signed declaration that the sample is the student's original work and that the student has received no help in its preparation. (The use of dictionaries and other reference work is permitted.);
  • Three letters of recommendation.

To be considered for acceptance in the Doctoral Program in translation, the student must complete an application for graduate admission; forms are available at  http://www.kent.edu/rags/GraduateStudies/Graduate-Admissions.cfm and fulfill the entrance requirements in the Doctoral Program in Translation.

Applications for admission to the Doctoral Program are accepted from students who have completed the M.A. in Translation, an M.A. in a Foreign Language, a Master's of Business Administration or a Master's in any other discipline with prior experience or training in languages or linguistics. Limitations of staff and space require that admission be restricted to the most promising applicants. In addition to regular admission procedures (http://www.kent.edu/rags/GraduateStudies/Graduate-Admissions.cfm), departmental requirements include:

  • A junior senior scholastic average of 3.0, and/or a grade point average of at least 3.5 during Master's studies
  • A score of 600 or better on the TOEFL examination
  • Three favorable recommendations from former professors or former employers and professional colleagues (for students with prior work experience)
  • A statement of goals and motivations for pursuing a career in translation studies
  • A sample (7-10 pages) from a research essay dealing with any aspect of translation or language; or a prospectus for a language informatics or translation studies project
  • Applicants to the translation studies specialization must present proof of a graduate degree from a professional translation program, or proof of translation ability including one or more of the following: a translation portfolio, official or certifiable record of professional work experience, or professional accreditation credential
  • Applicants to the translation tools/language informatics specialization must present proof of a graduate degree from a professional translation program, a computer science, management information systems or information science program or proof of requisite ability including a software portfolio, official or certifiable record of professional work experience, or professional accreditation credential. The Ph.D. program is normally open only to qualified individuals who can enroll as full-time students. Students meeting all other requirements for entry into the doctoral program may be permitted to enroll on a part-time basis as long as registration is limited to formal courses and seminars. Registration for "Research" and "Dissertation" is permitted only of full-time doctoral candidates
