Individuals who earn the B.A. in Art Education are prepared for careers in teaching art in grades pre K-12 as well as for work in museums, alternative schools, and other human services professions. Graduates are expected to be broadly knowledgeable about how and why the visual arts interact with the process of education for the betterment of individuals and our society.
The art education curriculum at Kent State University
reflects the standards for art teacher preparation established
by the National Art Education Association, the major professional
group in this discipline. Course work has been organized so students
receive a broad-based liberal education, a solid foundation in
the visual arts, and conceptually-based course work in teacher
education that focuses on an inquiry-oriented approach to teaching.

Foundational content in art emphasizes the expressive and response potentials of art. Studio experiences focus on the creation and manipulation of visual images; art history provides a context for tracing and examining mankind's artistic achievements over time; art criticism deals with the analysis,interpretation and judgment of artistic images and aesthetics relates to issues of what is art and how can artistic achievements can be recognized and understood.
Specialized coursework focuses on integrating ideas
and theories drawn from educational research and the art disciplines
with instructional activities that address what students know
and are able to do. Graduates are expected to be prepared to enter
our country's complex multicultural classrooms able to address
the range of community expectations, social values and academic
standards that are present now and likely to emerge in years to
come. This program balances the study of educational theory with
practice teaching in a variety of educational situations.
With the guidance of university supervisors, art education majors work with youngsters of varying ages and developmental levels, and in a variety of urban, suburban and rural placements to test their ideas about teaching while solidify their understanding of educational concepts. Upon completion of requirements, graduates receive the Multi-Age Ohio Provisional License for Visual Arts.
