Bio
Koon-Hwee is an assistant professor in the art education division at the School of Art. She coordinates the Saturday Art Program, a 10-week outreach program for children in the community.
She received her doctoral degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign–Urbana in 2003. Her doctoral research, entitled “A Story Told Visually: The Singapore Secondary School Art Style,” was co-winner of the 2006 Dissertation Award from the American Educational Researcher Association, Arts and Learning Special Interest Group; and she also received the 2007 Marilyn Zurmuehlen Award for Distinguished Research in Art Education from the National Art Education Association. She has made more than 20 solo and group scholarly presentations and has published in Art Education, Arts and Learning Journal, Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education, and Visual Arts Research. Her research interests include adolescent artistic learning, art teacher education, and qualitative methodology, especially visual narrative inquiry. She works with mixed-medium painting, digital photo-collage and photo-essay.
