In my work I reinterpret the familiar forms of domestic life in an attempt to reexamine aspects of the home in new and exciting ways. Drawing on domestic imagery, I seek to inject humor and irony into objects that are commonplace in the home. In addition, I draw upon natural beauty to make my work unassuming and inviting.
In the Den series, the throw pillows embody my delight in irony and dry humor. Each pillow depicts a male nude in a classical masculine pose accompanied by props from the domestic realm. The irony in the juxtaposition of the masculine form and domestic props is furthered by imprinting them on soft pillows. The series’ title, Den, weaves these
themes together through its double meaning as a home for wild animals and a familiar sanctuary in many homes.
Drawing from all aspects of my inspirations, the Bane series demonstrates the natural world invading the domestic. Each apron is made of handmade felt, a soft unassuming textile that draws the viewer in and encourages them to take a closer look. This is contrasted by the bright flowers which are depictions inedible poisonous plants, providing an ironic twist to the function of the garment. These plants are adorned with stitch work representations of spiders, hinting at the danger of the beautiful motifs.
