Children's Art Classes

The Children's Art Program is offered in conjunction with ARTE 31004 Art Education: Teaching Practicum a course taken by all KSU art education majors.

The Children's Art program offers these students a guided experience designed to assist them in putting into practice the theories they have learned in ARTE 31001 Art Education Foundation & Concepts.  They also apply design and media techniques learned in their art studio classes at the KSU School of Art to the teaching of art to young people from age 4-14 in after-school and occasional Saturday art classes each semester.

Assistant Professor Koon Hwee Kan supervises the Children's Art classes. Her goals for this special program are:

•  Instruct novice-teachers how to teach children and youngsters (age 4-14) in the Saturday Art Program to 1) create art; 2) respond to art; and 3) connect art to their lives.

•  Engage student teachers in researching contextual information of contemporary art and converting information into workable lesson plans for different age group to meet the new Ohio State Art Standards.

•  Assess and evaluate student teacher's instructional strategies, performance and professional growth.

•  Encourage art education majors to become critical, reflective, thoughtful, researching, and problem-solving teacher.

•  Demonstrate how to plan, prepare and install an art exhibit.
