Solving Your Advising Problems

First off, if you're a graduate student, go to Graduate Students...

Who is your faculty advisor?  Have you talked with her or him yet on this matter?

Check with the coordinator of the division for your major:
  - In Art Education, Dr. Vande Zande, division coordinator, will assign you to an advisor b ased on the initial letter of your last name.
  - In other divisions, the coordinator can supply you with an email address or office phone (or you can find this information on the advising wall just outside the entrance to the School office).
  - If you're a first-year student, check with academic advisor Linda Murphy in the School of Art office.

What is the nature of your advising question/problem?

Easy to resolve, no appointment needed

I need a permit to enroll in a class
  - You must be officially enrolled as an art major to have access to classes we control; if not you can file a change of major form up in Taylor Hall or work through your major department.
  - Come to the School office to pick up a permit form.  Complete and turn it in at any time.
  -

Once the School has issued an on-line permit, you are responsible for enrolling  in the course via WFS (on-line) or via phone.  You will not be enrolled until you complete this step

I need an override (there's no more space in class).
  - Obtain an override form in the School office.  Then, politely request the teacher of record to sign it IF s/he  agrees (s/he may or may not agree to add another student, depending on space considerations and other factors – this is a decision only the faculty member can make, so be patient.)
  -

Turn in the form to the School office, where you will be added to the class roll

I need to change or add a major, a degree program, a minor, or a concentration
  -

Complete the form available from 202C Taylor Hall; for majors/minors in the School, we sign it here and route it back up the chain.  You need to pick the form up from the School ONLY if there is more than one signature required (more than one new program/degree, etc.). You are responsible for delivering to each office involved

I have a question about scholarships:
  -

Check with your Student Financial Aid officer (Michael Schwartz 103).  Check out information on SoA scholarships on-lin

I need to make minor adjustments to an existing schedule
  -

Consult with your faculty advisor to understand implications of any changes (time to graduation, delay of completing prerequisites for future courses, etc.).  You can then make minor schedule changes via WFS or phone.

Pretty easy but an appointment will be needed

I need to make major changes to coming semester's schedule.
  - Schedule an appointment with your faculty advisor* OR if you're a first year student, make an appointment with academic advisor Linda Murphy.
  -

Bring in your KAPS report, your major worksheet, and any other paperwork concerning transferred credits, etc.

I need to build a semester's schedule (failed to pre-register or registration cancelled)
  -

Schedule an appointment with your faculty advisor.

I need to re-enroll at KSU or return after more than 1 year of stopping out OR for a second undergraduate degree.
  - Schedule appointment with Linda Murphy for an initial evaluation, then refer to a faculty advisor*
  - *BRING to both appointments: a transcript and the catalogue from year of matriculation (the year when you first enrolled), plus transcripts from any other institutions you've attended.

More complex: schedule an appointment and then plan to follow-up

I need an evaluation of transfer work
  -   Be sure that the KSU Registrar has an official copy of  your transcript from other institution(s). Allow at least 3 weeks for internal processing.
  - Schedule an  appointment with the director to begin to complete evaluation form once the processing is complete.
  -

*BRING: all relevant transcripts (these can be unofficial), the catalogue from previously-attended institutions, and any transfer evaluation already done here at KSU.

I need to petition for a substitution or other consideration in terms of specific courses.
  - Consult with your faculty advisor first for details on substitutions and an acceptable rationale
  -  Then bring the completed substitution form to the School office for a signature (drop off)
  -

If this is a complicated petition (particularly involving LERS and/or courses outside the School), you may need to schedule an appointment with the director (we will contact you or your advisor)

I need an evaluation of my portfolio (coursework to be credited in either studio division or advanced placement)
  - Schedule appointment for a portfolio review at posted times, then
  - Follow up with your faculty advisor as needed

I need to know how soon I can graduate
  - * Review your KAPS report with your faculty advisor
  -

Request a 64-hour (mid-point) audit of program requirements in 202C Taylor Hall.

  -

Request a graduation audit (202C Taylor Hall again) the semester before the semester in which you plan to graduate.
