What’s the best way to learn a language? Answer: Using real language in real-life situations. Each student in the Summer Institute will live with a German host family, and take language classes five hours per day. Students will visit historical and cultural venues in Saxony, and meet with German citizens for discussions about problems facing the former East Germany. The emphasis of the Summer Institute in German is immersion: linguistic, cultural, and environmental. Learning German is not a game, nor an intellectual exercise. It’s meeting and communicating with real people. It’s discussing issues that affect German society today. It’s learning about perception, the German cultural perception.
