Centennial SeriesAs part of Kent State University’s Centennial Celebration, Kent/Blossom Music is proud to announce its summer 2009 Centennial Series of Events. The full series will feature four free public concerts by Kent/Blossom Music faculty and ten concerts by the K/BM Chamber Players. Performers on the Faculty Series will include a list of prestigious music industry award winners such as the Emerson and Miami String Quartets, violinist Soovin Kim and pianists, and Ohio native, Spencer Myer. |

Joshua Smith, Flute
Joshua Smith joined The Cleveland Orchestra in September 1990 as principal flutist. Born in New Mexico, he began playing flute at the age of seven, and studied in Albuquerque with Frank Bowen. He was a member of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony from 1983-87. Mr. Smith subsequently attended Philadelphia 's Curtis Institute of Music. He enrolled in the Kent/Blossom Music professional music training program for the summers of 1988 (as winner of the Maurice Sharp Scholarship Award) and 1989.

Joela Jones, Piano
In 1972, Joela Jones was appointed principal keyboard player of The Cleveland Orchestra. In addition to her section work -- where she is called upon to play piano, harpsichord, organ, celesta, and, sometimes, accordion -- she has performed more than 30 different solo works with the Orchestra in a repertoire ranging from Bach to Bernstein. She has also performed extensively in solo and chamber music recitals.

Daniel McKelway, Clarinet
Clarinetist Daniel McKelway was born in Hanover, New Hampshire and was raised in Davidson, North Carolina where he began playing the clarinet at the age of eight. As a youth, he studied with the late Thomas Cameron, principal clarinetist of the Charlotte Symphony.

Theodore Kuchar, Resident Conductor
Theodore Kuchar is one of the most prolifically recorded conductors of the past decade, appearing on over 70 compact discs on the Naxos and Marco Polo labels. He has served as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine since 1992, in a contract spanning through 2000; upon completion of that agreement, he was awarded the title of Conductor Laureate for Life.

Scott Haigh, Bassist
Scott Haigh earned a bachelor of music degree from Northwestern University and pursued additional studies at the Congress of Strings and Aspen Music Festival. ]
Mr. Haigh served as principal bass of La Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico and spent one season with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra before joining The Cleveland Orchestra in 1978. In 1982, he was promoted to the position of first assistant principal bass.
Frank Rosenwein, Oboe
Frank Rosenwein joined The Cleveland Orchestra as principal oboe at the beginning of the 2005-06 season. From 2002 to 2005, he served as principal oboe of the San Diego Symphony and San Diego Opera. Mr. Rosenwein holds a bachelor of music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with former Cleveland Orchestra Principal Oboe John Mack, and a master of music degree from the Juilliard School of Music, where he studied with Elaine Douvas, co-principal oboe of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In 1999, he participated as a scholarship student in the Kent/Blossom Music program.
Stanley Konopka, Viola
Stanley Konopka has been a member of The Cleveland Orchestra since 1991 and was appointed assistant principal viola, 1993. He is a former member of The Pittsburgh Symphony and a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy . Former teachers include David Holland, Milton Preves and Robert Vernon. Also a faculty member for the ENCORE School for Strings and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Performed with Myriad, a local chamber ensemble.

Ivan Chan, Violin
A native of Hong Kong, Mr. Chan is first violinist of the Miami String Quartet. Prior to joining the quartet in 1995, he performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe and Hong Kong. Mr. Chan was the recipient of top prizes in numerous competitions including the Third Quadrennial Indianapolis International Violin Competition, the Ima Hogg Young Artists Auditions, the Washington International Competition and the Julius Stulberg Auditions.

John Clouser, Bassoon
John Clouser assumed the principal bassoonist position with The Cleveland Orchestra at the beginning of the 1997-98 season. He was associate principal bassoon of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal since 1994 and for six years was principal bassoon of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Clouser has taught at McGill University in Montreal, Rhodes College in Memphis , Tennessee and Haverford College in Haverford , Pennsylvania . Festivals attended include Peninsula Music Festival in Wisconsin , Colorado Music Festival, Tanglewood, Flagstaff Festival of the Arts, Round Top Festival in Texas and the Grand Teton Festival
Richard King, Horn
In 1995 Mr. King was appointed co-principal horn of The Cleveland Orchestra. He joined the Orchestra as associate principal horn in 1988, at the age of 20. Mr. King briefly attended the Juilliard School of Music and earned a diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia , where he studied with Myron Bloom, former principal horn of The Cleveland Orchestra.
Herbert Greenberg, Violin
HERBERT GREENBERG was born in Philadelphia where his teachers included Jascha Brodsky and Ivan Galamian. Further studies at Indiana University with Josef Gingold led to a Performers Certificate. Mr. Greenberg has been a member of the Minnesota Orchestra, associate concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony and from 1981 to 2001 served as concertmaster of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Stephen Geber, Cello
Stephen Geber joined The Cleveland Orchestra as principal cellist at the beginning of the 1973-74 season and retired upon the conclusion of the 2003 Blossom season. Prior to coming to Cleveland , he was a member of the cello section of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1965 to 1973. Born in Los Angeles into a family of professional cellists, he graduated with honors from the Eastman School of Music in 1965. He has appeared as soloist with a number of leading American orchestras and has performed widely in recital.

Ronald Phillips, Bassoon
Ronald Phillips, assistant principal bassoon, joined The Cleveland Orchestra in 1960 and retired in 2002. Previously, he was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, United States Navy Band, and the New Orleans Symphony. He began his bassoon studies at the age of 13. Before attending the Eastman School of Music, Mr. Phillips studied with George Goslee (then principal bassoonist of The Cleveland Orchestra). Other teachers included Vincent Pezzi and Schoenbach.
Michael Mayhew, Horn
Michael Mayhew joined The Cleveland Orchestra as associate principal horn in September 1997. Previously, he was a member of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. He also has performed with the New World Symphony, Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, and Houston Grand Opera. Michael Mayhew began the horn at the age of 13. He attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Robert Fries, graduating in 1992 with a bachelor of music degree. After Oberlin, Michael went to Rice University to study with William ver Meulen, and obtained his master of music degree.

Jerry Wong has concertized throughout the United States, Europe and Asia in such prestigious settings as Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in New York City, National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., Shriver Hall in Baltimore, Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, National Concert Hall of Taipei and Opera City Hall in Tokyo. In recent seasons, he has given solo recitals at universities, colleges and music teacher’s associations in California, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia.

Steven Rose has served as Principal Second Violin of The Cleveland Orchestra since 2001. Appointed to Cleveland Orchestra violin section, 1997. B.M., Cleveland Institute of Music.
