How to Find a Teaching Job

  • On-Campus Recruiting - Attend one of our Education SuperStart workshops or stop by the Career Services Center to learn about the job search assistance we offer. Many schools throughout Ohio, as well as other states, visit campus to attend our Teacher Interview Days.
  • Education Career Fairs - In addition to attending Kent State's Teacher Interview Days, you may wish to inquire about participating in other institution's education fairs.  The Job Hunters Guide - Services and Career Fairs for Educators, located in the Career Services Center, provides a listing of such events.
  • Job Openings - The Career Services Center posts job openings on line on our Flash Forward recruiting system.
  • Credentials Service - A necessary element in the job application process includes establishing a credential file. A credential file includes professional letters of recommendation that are shared with prospective employers. Reference writers may include teachers who have supervised your student teaching, principals, professors who are familiar with your academic and classroom abilities, and supervisors and advisors who are familiar with your leadership, and work experiences. References should be able to speak to your potential to perform as an excellent educator. It is helpful to supply your references with a recent copy of your resume and transcript which may help them in writing a more relevant and up to date letter.
  • Job Inquiry - After deciding what part of Ohio or the US you want to live in, you should call the appropriate school districts and inquire about possible future openings. The Career Services Center has a copy of the AAEE Directory of Public School Systems in the United States and the Ohio QED Guide. Names and addresses can also be obtained for your mailings when you actually apply for job openings.
    • The Phone Call - Using the phone is not always easy to do, but it can prove to be beneficial. You usually get immediate feedback. If you find out that a position is available or soon to be available, be sure to ask "How do I apply?" If no positions are open, be sure to ask, "Do you know of any openings at any schools in the area?"
  • Networking - Be sure to tell everyone you know that you are looking for a teaching position and ask them for help in this process. The more people you talk to, the better. Salespeople use this technique all the time in obtaining prospects. Contacts may include: your college professors, past high school or grade school teachers, your student teaching and field experience supervisors, the Career Services Center staff, Kent State University alumni, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, the family doctor or pastor etc.. Do not be afraid to ask for help. People will love to help you but they cannot help if you do not ask. Most jobs are found this way. Click here to get started.
