Student Employment and Your Future

So, you think your student job is just a way to earn some cash? Think again!

Did you know that your part-time student job can be a tremendous asset to you as you prepare for your future? Many students find it hard to believe that a part-time job can make them more marketable to employers upon graduation - but it's true!

Working while in college can help you build important skills such as effective communication, time management, and accountability. It can also help you acquire references, make contacts that can assist you with full time employment, and enhance the work experience section of your resume.

Make the most of your employment experience. The following are critical skills that almost every employer identifies as keys to success. Think about ways to build these skills in your current student employment position.

  • Appreciation for Diversity
  • Problem Solving
  • Creativity
  • Scientific/Analytical
  • Computer Skills
  • Writing
  • Speaking/Presenting
  • Interpersonal/Listening
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
We can help!

The counselors in the Career Services Center can help you make the connection between college and career employment by showing you how to understand and communicate your student employment experience. They will guide you in creating a resume, writing cover letters, and perfecting interview and networking techniques. Even more importantly, the counselors can give you confidence that you've chosen the proper major and career for you.

The Career Services Center can also help you find an internship or a full-time degreed position. All you need to do is register with our Flash Forward system, an on-line recruiting system that allows you to register academic and work experience, upload a resume and cover letter, search for jobs and sign up for on-campus interviews.

Visit our internship information page to discover internship program opportunities and connect with faculty who coordinate academic credit for internship experience.
