Explore Kent Chemistry
To Incoming High School Students Interested in Chemistry,
The faculty and students of the Chemistry Department at Kent State University invite you to attend “Explore Kent Chemistry Day” on Saturday, February 14, 2009 from 10:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. You can join other high school students interested in Chemistry as we introduce you to life as a Chemistry major at Kent. Activities include a tour of the department, an outline of degree programs and undergraduate research opportunities, an overview of available scholarships, a presentation of career opportunities in chemistry and a discussion with current chemistry majors at Kent. A special demonstration will be held in our 3D classroom. A lunch will be provided, where you can talk informally with students and faculty. In addition, a drawing will be held for two $50.00 gift certificates from Amazon.com.
Kent State University’s Chemistry Department offers both the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Chemistry, including B.S. degrees with concentrations in Biological Chemistry and Materials Chemistry. Graduates with Chemistry degrees from Kent have found employment in the chemical industry, have gone on to top medical and pharmacy schools, and have pursued Ph.D. degrees at highly prestigious universities including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Michigan, Case Western Reserve and Ohio State University. Detailed information about our Chemistry degree programs is enclosed.
Chemistry undergraduates have the best of both worlds at Kent. The small class sizes (upper level classes may have 10-20 students enrolled) and high academic standards mean that students receive the individualized, personal attention often associated with smaller colleges. But Kent State University is a major research university. As a result, undergraduate students at Kent also have access to a high-caliber research-active faculty and state of the art research facilities. This unique combination allows undergraduates at Kent to work hands-on in research labs with our award-winning faculty.
As a Chemistry undergraduate, you will learn from professors who are truly teacher-scholars. All 22 professors have Ph.D. degrees and combine a genuine commitment to undergraduate teaching with a passion for research. Many undergraduate students pursue research projects working one-on-one with faculty. A diverse range of undergraduate research opportunities are available in areas ranging from liquid crystal chemistry and surface chemistry to biological/biomedical chemistry.
Major equipment in the department includes four high-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers, an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer, two X-ray diffractometers, infrared, ultraviolet-visible, microwave, fluorescence and atomic absorption spectrometers, four mass spectrometers (GC-MS, MALDI-MS, SELDI-MS, and LC/ESI-MS), as well as equipment to support research in molecular biology including cell culture facilities and equipment for protein analysis.
It’s an exciting time to be a part of Kent ’s Chemistry Department and you can be part of the excitement. Join us at “Explore Kent Chemistry Day” on February 14.
