Living in Kent

Kent, Ohio is a city of about 30,000 that is located 35 miles southeast of Cleveland and 12 miles east of Akron in a peaceful suburban setting.  Kent offers the cultural advantages of a major metropolitan complex as well as the relaxed pace of semirural living.  There are a number of theater, dance and art groups at the University and in the community.  Blossom Music Center, the summer home of the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra and the site of Kent State University's cooperative program in visual art, music and theater, is only 15 minutes from the campus.  The Cleveland and Akron art museums are also nearby.  Professional sports in Cleveland and Akron are also within easy reach of the University.  There are a wide variety of recreational facilities available on the campus and within the local area.  Opportunities for outdoor activities such as swimming and other summer sports, ice-skating year-round, downhill and cross-country skiing abound.

Living & Housing Costs

Rooms in the graduate hall of residence are $2515 to $3360 per semester; married students' apartments may be rented for $669 to $699 per month (all utilities included).  Information concerning off-campus housing may be obtained from the University housing office.  Costs vary widely, but apartments typically rent for $500 to $600 per month.

Facts About Kent:

In 1961, a KSU grounds superintendent released ten cages of black squirrels from Ontario, Canada, to the campus.  Three years later, their population was an estimated 150.  Today, they have spread around the city and are considered unofficial mascots.

Kent has been known as "The Tree City" of Ohio since 1949 - it was also the very first Tree City.
