Materials Chemistry Concentration B.S. Degree:

The faculty of the Department of Chemistry includes a number of experts involved in the preparation and study of an unusually broad range of chemical materials including liquid crystals, electrooptical materials, nano-structured inorganic materials, polymers, and mesoporous materials with applications in areas including electronic displays, fuel cells, nanotechnology, and chemical separations.

Industries involved in cutting-edge materials science need scientists trained in their synthesis and characterization. This need led to the development of a unique undergraduate concentration in materials chemistry that began in 2002. The curriculum is almost equivalent to the American Chemical Society-accredited B.S. degree in chemistry, with specific substitutions of chemical electives. The required 53 credit hours of chemistry provide excellent preparation either for employment as a practicing chemist in industry or for advanced graduate study.
