Pre-Medicine Programs

Students may pursue a Pre-Medical program (Pre-medicine, Pre-Osteopathy, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Veterinary Medicine) at Kent State University . They must also complete all the requirements for a primary major or field of concentration. Students often choose to pursue the primary major in the biological sciences, chemistry, or psychology; they may, however, pursue any major in the college along with the premedical program. Note the BS Chemistry degree with a concentration in Biological Chemistry includes all the courses required for the Pre-Medical program. Pre-Medical Program Requirements are given below:

Pre-Dentistry

Some dental Schools may also require the following strongly recommended courses: CHEM 30101 , 30102 , 30103 , 30284 , 30360 , MATH 12002. Distributive requirements in the social sciences should be taken in the behavioral science areas (sociology and psychology).

Some medical schools may also require the following strongly recommended courses: CHEM 40245 Biochemical Foundations of Medicine or CHEM 40247 Principles of Biochemistry; MATH 30111 Basic Probability and Statistics. Distributive requirements in the social sciences should be taken in the behavioral science areas (SOC 12050 plus SOC 42563 Medical Sociology; PSYC 11762 plus PSYC 40111 Abnormal Psychology recommended).

Veterinary Medicine

The current “Admission Guidelines” of The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Veterinary Medicine indicate that, in order to be eligible for “admission without condition”, students pursuing the Kent State Premedicine program should select BSCI 30156 Elements of Genetics and BSCI 30171 General Microbiology from among the biological sciences options and should add either CHEM 30284 Introductory Biological Chemistry or Principles of Biochemistry to the chemistry requirements above if neither is already being taken as part of the primary major. In addition, OSU recommends coursework in economics, sociology and psychology to fulfill the social sciences requirements. Speech (communications), history, classical studies and/or comparative literature are recommended for the humanities. A course in statistics also is encouraged. Math 30111 Basic Probability and Statistics is recommended.

Pre-Pharmacy Programs

Pre-pharmacy study may be completed at Kent State University by taking basic academic courses through the College of Arts and Sciences. Students are required to complete a primary major. Students often choose to complete the primary major in Chemistry or Biological Sciences. The following courses are recommended for students interested in admission to Pharmacy Schools:

BSCI 10120 Biological Foundations
BSCI 20140 Cell Biology
BSCI 30030 Human Physiology
BSCI 30171 General Microbiology
BSCI 30518 Vertebrate Anatomy

CHEM 10060 , 10061 General Chemistry I and II
CHEM 10062 , 10063 General Chemistry I and II Laboratory
OR
CHEM 10960, 100961 Honors General Chemistry

CHEM 30475 , 30476 Organic Chemistry Laboratory I and II
CHEM 30481 , 30482 Organic Chemistry I and II

MATH 12001 Algebra and Trigonometry
MATH 12002 Analytic Geometry and Calculus I
MATH 12003 Analytic Geometry and Calculus II

PHY 13001 , 13002 General College Physics I and II
PHY 13021 , 13022 General College Physics Laboratory I and II
OR
PHY 23101 , 23102 General University Physics I and II

Remaining course work should be selected from the social sciences (see LER listings in anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology and sociology; most pharmacy schools also consider history to fall into this category) and from the humanities (see LER lists for English, philosophy and fine arts). Note, there are different requirements for students interested in admission to the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Pharmacy (NEOUCOP) (see below).

All students should be familiar with the requirements of the school of pharmacy to which they plan to apply and attend. Students should also consult with the pre-pharmacy advisor in the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Soumitra Basu (room 203 Williams Hall, e-mail sbasu@kent.edu, telephone 330-672-3906).

Pre-Pharmacy Program for NEOUCOP

The Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Pharmacy (NEOUCOP) shares the campus and many of the facilities and services of the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) in Rootstown. NEOUCOP offers a four -year Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) degree. It has a consortial relationship with four Northeastern Ohio public universities: Kent State , Cleveland State , Youngstown State , and Akron Universities . Admissions criteria include completion of a two- or three-year pre-pharmacy program at an accredited university as well as satisfactory scores on the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT). Each of the consortial universities has up to 15 admissions slots for students with acceptable GPAs, PCAT scores, interview scores, etc. For further information go to the NEOUCOP website: www.neoucom.edu or contact Dr. Soumitra Basu (room 203 Williams Hall, e-mail sbasu@kent.edu, telephone 330-672-3906).
