The twenty-second annual National Model North Atlantic Treaty Organization Conference will be held at Howard University, Washington, DC., from February 21 - 24, 2007. The Model is jointly sponsored by Howard University, Washington, DC., and Kent State University, Kent, Ohio.

The Model NATO is a simulation of the proceedings of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, augmented by pre-conference study and embassy briefings. It provides a unique opportunity for university and college students to study the role, structure and activities of NATO, as well as the military, political-security, economic, and social issues facing the Alliance.

Through simulation, students gain a better and clearer understanding of the capabilities and constraints that shape the policies of NATO countries in determining matters of collective defense. Apart from dealing with a prepared agenda, students grapple with a contemporary crisis to be revealed at the Model.

Each participating university represents a Member State of NATO and /or a Partnership for Peace (PfP) Member State.  Upon registration, you shall receive preparatory material, which shall include the Agenda, Country Profile, Delegation Handbook and NATO Handbook. Your delegation shall be briefed at the Embassy of the country/countries you represent. 

The Secretary General for the 2007 Model NATO is Kelsey Nichols from Converse College.  Highlights of the 2006 Model were:

► Keynote Speaker - Mr. Kurt Volker, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of European and Eurasian affairs, U. S. Department of State. 

► Special guest speaker - Brigadier General Antonello A. Vitale - Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff, Strategic Concept, Policy and Interoperability (SCPI), NATO allied Command Transformation, Norfolk, Virginia who spoke on NATO Transformation.

► Ms. Carmen Iezzi, Atlantic Council of the United States, addressed NATO and the Successor Generations at the 2006 Model.

► Embassy briefings for country delegations.
