Jean-François Bureau is a French national, born in Paris. He is a graduate of the Institut d'études politiques de Paris as well as of the Université de Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, from which he holds a degree in defense and foreign affairs. Before assuming his present position in September, 2007, he served for nine years as Director for Information and Communication at the French Ministry of Defense and was the spokesperson for that ministry. Mr. Bureau has a long history of distinguished service to his government and a great deal of experience in defense and security affairs. He has numerous publications in the areas of defense and arms control to his credit.

Mr. Bureau is a Chevalier of the French Légion d'Honneur, a Chevelier of the Ordre du Mérite, an Officer of the Ordre du Mérite de la République fédérale d'Allemagne, and a member of the Institut français des relations internationales.
