Welcome!   I am thrilled that you will be participating in Model NATO 2008.  My name is Sarah Walters and I am a senior History and Politics double-major at Converse College in South Carolina.  Throughout my college career, opportunities to supplement classroom learning with Model Programs such as Model NATO, in addition to traveling abroad, have proved to be my most valuable experiences.  I have participated in the Arab League Cultural Exchange in Cairo, Egypt, studied at the Global Institute for Leadership and Civic Development at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, and recently completed a concentrated summer Arabic program at the Yemen Language Center in Sana'a, Yemen.  This is my fourth year participating in Model NATO and my third serving as a member of the Secretariat.  If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to email me at sarah.walters@converse.edu.  Hopefully this will be a positive experience for all of us as we explore some major issues in the world.

With the topics that have been assigned to each committee, it is my hope that we will produce responses that go beyond short-term solutions, reflecting the research, thought, and healthy debate of the group.  As delegates, you are tasked with creating a solution to these problems, a plan of action to achieve the solution, and finding the means by which you can implement the plan.  It is vital that all members of committees fully prepare to participate through active research.

Please take advantage of the easy access we have to media outlets in your respective countries through the internet so you may stay abreast of current events.  Although some of our topics are age-old problems, daily happenings can change the stance a country takes on an issue like deployment of troops abroad or even extremism within their borders.   We are hoping for a constructive debate and an innovative approach at resolving these issues, but do have fun along the way!  I wish you all the best and I am looking forward to meeting with you soon.
