NATO, the Enduring Alliance (History 38095) aims to introduce students to the historical and contemporary roles of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which, since its founding in 1949 during the early stages of the Cold War, has had an ongoing impact on American and European strategic policy making. 

It has been argued that NATO is perhaps the most successful military alliance in world history.  The Cold War's end, however, has necessitated a reorienting of NATO's mission in the altered international security environment, a process that has at times aroused considerable controversy (e.g., Bosnia, the Kosovo campaign, enlargement, Afghanistan, Iraq).

A critical component of this course is the preparation of students for their involvement in the Twenty - Second Annual Model NATO in Washington, D.C. on February 21 - 24, 2007.  Co-sponsored by Kent State University and Howard University, the Model NATO has student delegations from American and Canadian universities representing individual NATO states or associated non-member states in a simulated ministerial session of the organization. 

At the 2006 Model, Kent State represented Bulgaria, Greece, Switzerland and Macedonia.
