The Department of Justice Studies offers the following graduate programs:

Goals and Objectives of the M.A.

The goals of the M.A. in Justice Studies are for highly motivated students to build a firm theoretical and methodological foundation on the causation, treatment, and control of crime and delinquency, and the process of law and justice, to develop professional skills through experience in situations where knowledge gained in the classroom can be tested in applied settings, to develop critical thinking skills required to make a positive contribution to the justice profession, and to develop a behavioral and attitudinal orientation appropriate for the criminal justice profession.  Another important purpose of the program is to prepare students for advanced study at the doctoral level.

Current Program and Admission Requirements

In addition to the regular application requirements of the University as outlined in the KSU Graduate Catalog, admission to the M.A. program in JUS requires

ü      three letters of recommendation from persons (preferably academic) who can attest to the applicant’s potential for graduate study

ü      a one-page statement of motivation for pursuing the graduate degree, including discussion of career interests and goals

ü      a 3.2 undergraduate G.P.A.* (on a 4.0 scale), and

ü      submission of scores on the GRE (Graduate Record Exam).

To earn a Master of Arts degree in Justice Studies, students must complete a total of 33 semester hours, including five required courses (15 hours), 12 hours of electives, and six hours of research (thesis, or internship and research, or research plus another 60000 level course).  Although specializations per se are not defined, the selection of elective courses and internship options are varied enough to allow for personal preferences.  All students must complete a capstone research experience to earn the degree. More detailed information on the coursework requirements for the M.A. is available here

* Students with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0-3.19 may apply for admission on a conditional basis.
