Paul Gronke


Biography

Paul Gronke (PhD Michigan, '93, BA Chicago '82) is an associate professor and chair of the department of Political Science at Reed College, Portland OR. Gronke studies American politics and methodology, specializing in convenience and early voting, public opinion, Congressional and Presidential elections, and social science methodology. 

He has published a book, The Electorate, The Campaign, and the Vote (Michigan 2000) and  scholarly articles in American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Public Opinion Quarterly, Electoral Studies, Political Research Quarterly, and American Politics Quarterly, and chapters in edited volumes.

Gronke's most recent research projects compare public faith and trust in social and political institutions, especially the military and the mass media; and the process of “early voting” in the United States.  Gronke has written opinion pieces for a variety of newspapers, has served as a radio and television commentator, and manages a weekly email list for students of American politics for W.W. Norton.  In 2005, Gronke established the Early Voting Information Center (http://earlyvoting.net) to study early voting and advocate for best practices in voting by mail and early voting systems.

Gronke lives with his wife Karin Purdy and their four children in Portland, OR where he runs and follows local politics.
