Conflict Resolution

  1. When conflict arises, address it directly. Don't ignore the problem, it will only get bigger.
  2. Talk to the individuals involved one-on-one first. Get both sides of the story separately, so the individuals are able to speak freely.
  3. Listen and don't interrupt. Let the individuals speak and simply act as a sounding board. Interrupting will only cause frustration.
  4. Focus on the problem not the person. Resolving conflict is about the problem not the people involved.
  5. Don't play favorites. Don't allow your personal feelings or friendships get in the way of resolving the conflict. It will only create more problems. If necessary, get a neutral third party to mediate.
  6. Don't compromise the principles of your organization. Make decisions in the best interest of the organization. Keep in mind the foundations that your organization was built upon.
  7. Make a solid decision and follow through with it. Create a resolution that everyone can live with in the long term and stick with. Otherwise, the conflict will arise later down the line.
