Tips for an Effective Presentation
- Arrive early to catch any problems. Check any equipment you may be using, such as computers or overhead projectors, to make sure they work in the presentation room.

- Have a strong opening. Never apologize for being unprepared, just do your best. Start with something that will grab the attention of your audience.
- Know your audience. Be prepared and know who you are presenting for, then adjust your presentation to their interests. Use language and references that they will understand.
- Provide handouts. List your important points and details, so people will be able to take them and remember the information when they leave.
- Use humor. Only use humor when appropriate and only to accent your presentation.
- Use gender neutral pronouns. Avoid using he and she to avoid alienating half of your audience.
- Finish early. Allow time for questions as you go through the presentation and finish a few minutes early while you still have your audiences attention.
- Speak with conviction. Believe in what you are saying and others will believe in it as well.
- Don't read from notes.
- Maintain eye contact. Look at one person for 3 seconds, then go on to another person. This makes your audience feel more connected to you and they will give you their attention.
- Practice! Practice! Practice!
