Mission Statement

As Linda Flower says, “The ability to adapt your knowledge to the needs of the reader is often crucial to your success as a writer.”  Tutors at KSUEL’s Writing Center and Online Writing Lab want you to be the best writer you can be.  They want to help you to clarify your ideas, develop a sense of purpose and audience for your writing, and assist you with strategies that will help you to use your knowledge to produce an essay or other writing assignment that will show that knowledge and ability to its best advantage.  Our tutors know that good writing is hard work, but that, as Donald Murray points out, “Making something right is immensely satisfying. . . .”  We want to help you to understand that satisfaction and to take pride in a job well done. Visit us!

When Is Online Tutoring Available?

Tutoring is available during Writing Center hours Monday through Thursday during Fall and Spring semesters.  Tutors in the center will make it a point to check for incoming papers and respond to those papers during the hours they are scheduled to work.  Because hours of operation are limited, be sure to allow plenty of time for response when you send your paper–during the week Monday through Wednesday, at least a day’s turn around time.  Papers received on Thursday or later may not receive responses until the following week.  Please plan accordingly.

Who Can Use the East Liverpool OWL?

The OWL, like the Writing Center, is open to all students of KSUEL for all classes.

How Will An Online Tutorial Session Develop?

Tutors will individualize student needs from ideas to drafting and revision to suggestions for editing.  You can contact a tutor to discuss ideas, or you can submit drafts in progress for comments by tutors.  You can:

  • Brainstorm ideas for writing

  • Discuss purpose and audience

  • Discuss format for papers

  • Discuss ideas for expansion and the use of examples

  • Discuss organizational strategies

  • Talk about revision strategies

  • Get help with learning to read like a writer and with strategies for self-editing.

Remember, your tutor will help with your paper.  She or he cannot write your paper for you, nor can he or she edit for you Tutors can:

  • help with ideas for writing, sometimes including helping you understand the assignment

  • point out areas where organization could be improved

  • point out areas that may need more examples to help your audience to understand your  points as fully as possible, and

  • give advice about areas to focus on in editing.

What Do I Need to Start?

You need to provide your tutor with:

  1. Information about your assignment and the class you are writing for

  2. Ideas about what you want to say and how you want the tutor to help

  3. A draft of your paper sent as an attachment to your email  (send to studenttutor@eliv.kent.edu) or pasted into the body of your email.
