Moulton Scholars Program Description

The Moulton Scholars program provides faculty members with resources to use technology in their scholarship. It supports innovative projects to enhance teaching and other forms of scholarship .  Scholarships are normally for one semester and include office space and equipment in Moulton Hall and consultation with people who have expertise in pedagogy, technology and curriculum development.  There are three options to becoming a Moulton Scholar, each of which entails having a project plan and submitting a brief application to the fpdc.  In addition, Moulton Scholars share their projects with colleagues during monthly teaching and technology seminars.  It is our experience that the following options have produced very successful projects.

  • Option 1: Have a project plan that can be completed as part of a normal workload with the use of resources in Moulton Hall.
  • Option 2: Have a project plan with a special time allocated for completion in residence at Moulton.  Professional leaves offer such an opportunity, as do departmental reallocation in load.
  • Option 3: Apply to the Faculty Professional Development Center Council for a scholarship of up to $2,000 toward a two credit hour load reallocation for the term of the scholarship which, when matched with departmental sources of one credit hour, enables the faculty member to have the equivalent of a three credit hour course time reallocation for the special project.

Amount: In Option 3 Up to $2,000 (the equivalent for one two-credit hour course) can be linked with departmental funds of $1,000 to make a 3 credit hour course reallocation for the term of the scholarship.  Small grants (up to $500) can be applied for in conjunction with this scholarship for technology aides such as software or small equipment.  Grants from the University Research Council and the University Teaching Council may also be available depending the project.  Up to $500 for professional development and teaching aides are available for those applying via Options 1 & 2.

Eligibility: The Moulton Scholars Program is open to faculty members who teach credit courses at least half-time and have not had a Moulton Scholarship in the last three years.

Selection: The fpdc Council uses a subcommittee comprised of its committees on Technology and the Scholarship of Teaching to review and make recommendations on scholar ships. Depending upon funds available, there may be 8 or more awards a year.  Office and equipment space is available each semester for up to eight faculty scholars.

Submission: Bring or send one cover sheet, and 8 copies of your application package to the Faculty Professional Development Center, 217 Moulton Hall, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio 44242.
