Scholars Program Description
Kent State
University is one of eight institutions of higher education invited to
participate in the Ohio Teaching Enhancement for Junior Faculty coordinated
by Miami University. Other institutions include: Bowling Green State University,
Miami University, The Ohio State University, Ohio University, Sinclair
Community College, University of Toledo, and Wright State University.
The program on which this collaborative effort is based was developed
over the last twenty years at Miami University. Miami's program was recognized
nationally when it received the prestigious Theodore Hesburg Award in
1994 for "being the most effective professional development program
in the United States in impacting undergraduate teaching and learning."
The Ohio Teaching Enhancement Program provides a collaborative approach
to enhancing undergraduate education through the work of faculty in their
first five years of teaching in higher education.
The broad
aims of the yearlong program include:
- enhancing
undergraduate learning
- enhancing
participants' teaching and learning
- building
a community of scholars around teaching: locally, statewide, and nationally
The elements
of the program for participants include:
- Participating
in a yearlong program that focuses on teaching;
- The development
of collegial relationships across disciplines;
- Two funded
conferences on teaching: one in the fall at Miami University (the Lilly
Conference on Teaching) and one in the spring in California (the Lilly
West Conference on Teaching);
- A one
course load reallocation in teaching during either the fall or spring
semester of the project year;
- The opportunity
to focus on and develop an aspect of teaching and learning during the
program;
- Up to
$200 and the possibility of further support for a teaching project during
the program;
- Working
with a faculty mentor of the participant's choice;
- Working
with a student associate of the participant's choice;
- Developing
a language and methods for the scholarship of teaching, both individually
and as communities;
- An ongoing
program where faculty members finishing their year in the program meet
with new faculty beginning the program
Eligibility:
Tenure track faculty members in their first five years of teaching
at KSU
