Kathryn
Wilson
Biography
Kathryn Wilson, an Assistant Professor of Economics at Kent State
University received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin
in August of 1996. She specializes in Public Finance and Labor Economics,
teaching courses on the Economics of Health Care, Public Finance, Principles
of Microeconomics, and an Honors College Colloquium on Microeconomics.
Kathy's research interests focus on poverty-related topics with policy
relevance including disability, retirement, educational attainment, and
teen pregnancy. When she is not working, she enjoys being active in a
variety of sports (golf, softball, soccer, running, rockclimbing, ...),
hiking in the woods with her dog, and reading.
Teaching
Project
Kathy looks forward to participating in the Teaching Scholars
program in order to become better adept at not only teaching students
the knowledge she has of economics but also engaging them in critical
thinking and a pursuit of knowledge that will continue beyond the classroom.
She expects this program to provide a platform for serious dialogue about
teaching and sees the mentoring by a more senior professor and the partnering
with a student as an opportunity to learn from the experience of others
and gain insight into what things students find effective. More specifically,
her goals for the Teaching Scholars program are two-fold: to learn how
to better involve all students in active learning either through class
discussions or cooperative teaming techniques and to consider ways to
encourage students to focus on a deeper understanding how the coursework
can be applied in their lives rather than attempting to memorize the material.
