Mineralogy Field Trip

LOCATION:  Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialities, Inc., quarry in northwestern Ohio

DATES:  Every Fall

COURSE AND CREDITS: Geol 23063; 4 credits

SUGGESTED BACKGROUND COURSES: Physical and Historical Geology, Mineralogy,

PURPOSE OF FIELD TRIP: Students have an unparalleled opportunity at this quarry to study marine rocks and the fossils and epigenetic minerals they contain that are now exposed at the crest of the northerly trending Findlay Arch. The rocks were deposited originally on an ancient (Middle Silurian) carbonate platform. Huge reef structures in them, with massive fossil-rich cores and well-bedded flanking rocks, are expressed both structurally and topographically.  Cavities in fossils and sedimentary breccias are lined with celestite, fluorite, spahlerite, and other late diagenetic minerals that were deposited by brines driven out of the Appalachian Basin during the Late Paleozoic Alleghenian orogeny.

ESTIMATED FEES AND COSTS: Personal expenses
