Geology of Ohio Field Trip

LOCATION: Locations in the Akron Gorge Metro Park in Cuyahoga Falls 

DATES:  vary from Summer through Fall 

COURSE AND CREDITS: Geol 4/51073; 3 credits 

SUGGESTED BACKGROUND COURSES: Physical and Historical Geology. 

PURPOSE OF FIELD TRIP: Students see marine shales (Meadville) and siltstones (Sharpsville) of Mississippian age, continental sandstones (Sharon) of Pennsylvanian age and the topographic expression of these rock formations. Other geologic features that can be observed are glacial erratics, fossil wood and brachiopods, parallel bedding, cross-bedding, disconformities, caves formed by differential weathering, jointing, evidence for slow mass movement (creep), a stream valley, contact springs, and a renewable energy resource (dam built for hydroelectric power).
