PURPOSE OF FIELD TRIP:Every Fall Dr. Daniel Holm takes the undergraduate Structural Geology class on a three-day field trip to central Pennsylvania to experience mapping in the Valley and Ridge Province.  Students are oriented to the large scale first and second order features of the province on the first day and then spend one or two days doing a detailed mapping project in the spectacular exposures of the abandoned Bear Valley strip mine in Shamokin, PA.  The mine provides a rare opportunity to investigate world class structures in 3D and students leave the mine with a much greater understanding and appreciation of deformation features.  The field trip also includes a diversion to Centralia, PA to investigate damage associated with the infamous underground coal mine fire that has been burning since 1962.
