ALUMNI GIVING

An endowed scholarship is one of the most precious and enduring gifts a Kent State alumnus can make to the university. This year a number of Kent graduates made significant contributions to help ease the financial burdens of future Kent students. One of them was Mel Mellis, '68, a Cincinnati investment adviser who recently joined the Kent State University Foundation Board of Directors. Mel and his wife, Susan, established a $100,000 Medallion Scholarship as part of the Founders Scholars Program.

"Susan and I believe that children are our future!" he said. "Education has always been important to both of us. Through our good fortune and hard work, we have been able to make one of our dreams come true. That is to send someone to Kent State who may not be able to afford a college education without extra help. Both of us had quite a financial struggle through our college years, and we hope to make it an easier experience for other young men and women."

Since 1991, the Founders Scholars Program has raised more than $4 million to elevate the standard of academic excellence to which all students aspire by providing a variety of merit-based awards to deserving freshmen. The four-year Mel Mellis Medallion Scholarship will be awarded to freshmen, demonstrating need, who enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences.
