IN MEMORY: TREVOR J. REES

A local newspaper columnist recently described Trevor J. Rees as "the football professor." Rees was captain of his high school football team in Dover, Ohio, and later came to Kent State University as athletic director. He retired in 1972, after more than 25 years of service. For many of those years Rees was head football coach, leading the Golden Flashes to victory in 13 out of 18 seasons. He still holds the most winning record of any football coach in the university's history.

Trevor Rees may be most remembered, however, for the high standards he set for the young players he coached - and for his talent in recruiting a quality team during an era when there were no football scholarships. When he passed away in January 1999, the Trevor J. Rees Football Endowment was established by his wife, Edith Louise Bryant Rees, and their four children. The $70,000 endowment will provide scholarships for student-athletes at Kent State. About 50 individuals who knew the coach also made gifts in his memory.

"Dad took a great deal of pride in his efforts to teach and coach young men and women of Kent State University for 26 years. This endowment recognizes his successful devotion to students, student-athletes and intercollegiate athletics," said John Rees, his son, who is Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Advancement at Kent.
