The Kent/Blossom Music 1999 chamber music series will begin on Thursday, July 1, at 8 p.m. in Ludwig Recital Hall of the Kent State University Music and Speech Center.

The Quartet will collaborate on July 1 with Cleveland Orchestra member Michael Sachs, trumpet, and Joela Jones, continuo, on the Baldassare Sonata No. 1 in F and the Torelli Sinfonia in D. On July 8, at 8 p.m., Paul Kushious, cello, will perform in Schubert's Quintet in C Major, Op. 163.

The two programs will present works that include Haydn's String Quartet Op. 74, No. 3; Borodin's String Qurtet in D, No. 2; Starer String Quartet No. 1; Shostakovich String Quartet in C minor, Op. 110, No. 8.

The 1999 season will mark the seventh residency by the Miami String Quartet at Kent/Blossom Music. Praised for their "deeply exciting, supple and distinguished" performances (Miami Herald), the Miami String Quartet has quickly established its place among the most respected young quartets in America.

In 1992, the Quartet became the first such ensemble in a decade to win First Prize of the Concert Artists Guild New York Competition, and was also awarded the competition's special ITT Corporation Prize.

The Miami String Quartet was also Laureate of the 1993 Evian String Quartet Competition and the 1991 London International String Quartet Competition; in 1989, they won the Grand Prize of the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition.

Founded at the New World School of the Arts in Miami and in residence at the Florida International University, the Miami String Quartet has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe, and in Iceland and Panama.

Festival appearances have included Chamber Music Northwest, Kent/Blossom Music, the Maverick Concerts, the Princeton Summer Music Concerts, and the new Bellingham Chamber Music Festival. They have also been heard at the Pensacola and Palm Beach festivals, and at the Strings in the Mountains Festival in Colorado Springs.

Since the founding of Kent/Blossom Music in 1968 by George Szelland Louis Lane, more than 1900 young artists and 200 world class professionals have shared the Kent/Blossom experience with a northeast Ohio audience in excess of 136,000 and radio listeners easily beyond 2 million.

Those experiences have propelled hundreds of remarkable young musicians into the ranks of major orchestras, opera companies and conservatory faculties throughout the United States and around the globe, including sixteen present members of The Cleveland Orchestra.

This concert is presented by Kent/Blossom Music with the support of WKSU (89.7). Admission to the performances will be $8. Students and children under 18 admitted free five minutes before the concert in available seating.
