MA in French, Spanish, German and Latin Pedagogy

The Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies at Kent State University currently offers courses leading to an M. A. degree in French, Spanish, German and Latin Pedagogy. Students may enroll on a full-time or part-time basis. Those enrolled as full-time students are eligible to apply for a graduate teaching assistantship, which covers tuition and provides a 9 month stipend. Note that these programs do not lead to teaching licensure. For licensure options please contact Dr. Rebecca Chism at rlchism@kent.edu.

Degree requirements:

A. Required for all M.A. students (12 hours)

  • MCLS 60601 Linguistics for Language Professionals
  • MCLS 60661 Second Language Acquisition
  • MCLS 60098 Research in L2 Pedagogy
  • MCLS 50060 Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages (K-12) or MCLS 60094 College Teaching of Foreign Languages.

B. And 3 of 4 of the following (9 hours)

  • MCLS 60663 Second Language Curriculum and Testing
  • MCLS 60662 Teaching Literature and Culture
  • MCLS 60621 Teaching Conversation Strategies
  • MCLS 50654 Computers in Second Language Acquisition

C. Foreign Language Courses (12 hours)

French

  • FRN 53213 Advanced Composition
  • FRN 53216 Contemporary French culture 
  • 2 electives in French language, literature or culture

German

  • GER 51212 Stylistics
  • GER 51216 Contemporary German Culture
  • 2 electives in German language, literature or culture

Spanish

  • SPAN 58215 Advanced Composition
  • SPAN 58216 Contemporary Hispanic Cultures 
  • 2 electives in Spanish language, literature or culture

Latin

  • LATIN 66211 Advanced Prose Composition
  • CLAS/HIST 51006 Roman History or CLAS 51301 Classical Mythology 
  • 2 electives in Latin language, literature or culture.

D. One Graduate Elective (3 hours)

E. Final Project developed during the last course of instruction
