Intersession in Spain

Kent State University will sponsor one three-credit course in Spanish Literature and Culture during the 2007 Intersession to be taught in Valencia, Spain.

In this course, we will study the period of the Franco dictatorship between 1939-1975 and the post-franco transition to  democracy in order to prepare ourselves for more in-depth analysis of Spanish narrative in the post-franco period. This will be a 40000 level course, with possibilities of adapting it to a 40000/30000 level course if needed for some students.

Though the dates are not yet exact, expect to leave Ohio at the  end of Spring semester finals week (approximately May, 11) and return for the beginning of Summer I session (approximately June, 11).

Room and board will be arranged with families living near the University of Valencia. The $3,500 cost will cover room and board, airfare, tuition, registration and insurance, and two sponsored daytrips to nearby points of interests.

The city of Valencia is a safe, student and traveler-friendly city on the sunny Mediterranean coast.

If you are interested, please contact Dr. Patrick Gallagher. (pgallag1@kent.edu; 330-672-1831)

Anyone interested in the Valencia intersession.  Please attend an informational/organizational meeting on Tuesday, January 30, at 3:45pm in foyer 308 Satterfield Hall.

Advising

September  20 , 2006

Dear Spanish Major/Minor:

According to University records, you are currently pursuing a major or minor in one of the fields taught by the Department of Modern and Classical Language Studies.

This is a reminder that, before registering for Spring 2007 classes, you are required to meet with your departmental adviser by October 13th.  Your adviser will review your progress toward completion of the major/minor and help you plan your courses for Spring 2007 and future semesters to make sure that you graduate on time.  You will be given authorization to enroll in MCLS classes (within 48 hours in some cases) after meeting with your adviser, but it is important to remember that this authorization will not hold a space indefinitely in those classes for you.  You will still need to register for them as soon as possible to make sure you get a place in them before they fill.  Courses in MCLS now often fill long before they start, and you do not want to be shut out of a course you need to graduate on time.  A few minutes with your adviser each semester makes sure you do not have to waste extra semesters or years.

Please visit the following Web Site to find your adviser’s name and contact information:  http://dept.kent.edu/mcls/  Click on Advising, Spanish, Advising to find your name.

Important Notes:

1)       If you fail to meet with your adviser by October 13th, 2006, a hold will be placed on your entire university registration for the Spring 2007 semester and you will not be able to register for any classes.  This hold will be removed only after you meet in person with your adviser.

2)       It may take up to two business days for authorizations to be entered.  Therefore, make sure that you meet with your adviser at least two business days before you are scheduled to register for Spring 2007, or you will miss the first days of your scheduled registration.

3)       If you receive this letter, you are on record with the University as having a major or minor in MCLS and will be subject to this policy.  If you do not intend to continue with that major or minor, you need to do the necessary paperwork with your College office immediately to drop it and let the appropriate MCLS adviser know before October 13th, 2006, or your entire registration for Spring 2007 classes will be blocked.

Sincerely,

Dr. Harold Fry                                       Dr. Luis Hermosilla
