Mouse-colored Wool Coat with Metallic Ribbon Trim
Unknown maker, England, ca. 1750s.
The coat belonged to the Gell family.
Gift of Ross Trump in memory of his mother, Helen Watts Trump.
KSUM 1995.68.2

This mid eighteenth-century justaucorps appears more somber than most in our collection because of its subdued color. Nonetheless, it is elegantly trimmed with silver braid and metal incised buttons. A vest customarily accompanied such coats. As coats were not usually removed in public, the back of these vests were seldom made of valuable fabric nor were areas covered by the coat decorated since they would not be seen. Fabrics were valuable and used judiciously.
