Flora and Fashion: Gardens Become Us!
Stager Gallery, January 26, 2000 to January 28, 2001
Jean Druesedow, Curator

Day dress
English, about 1818
White cotton mull embroidered with ginger-colored sprigs in wool
The Silverman/Rodgers Collection, 1983.1.30
Acquired through Cora Ginsburg, Inc.

The delicate floral embroidery on this dress was done with a tambour hook. Shaped much like a very fine crochet hook, this tool was used, in combination with an embroidery hoop, by professional embroiderers as well as by skilled amateurs to create a tiny chain stitch that could be worked in intricate patterns and shadings.
