Evening Dress
English, about 1855
Ivory silk taffeta with vertical bands of warp printed flowers
The Silverman/Rodgers Collection 1983.1.139abc

The textile pattern on this chiné, or warp printed, dress is reminiscent of that worn by Queen Victoria on her entrance into Paris in 1855, an "English garden" filled with roses. This dress came to the Museum with the bodice intact but the skirt taken off its waistband and scraps of the original fabric. The cartridge pleating in the back and the soft pleats of the front were reconstructed following the original pleat lines and hand stitched to a new waistband.
