Evening Dress
English or American, about 1855
White satin with borders of satin hand-painted with floral sprays, trimmed with blonde lace and tinsel
The Silverman/Rodgers Collection, 1983.1.82ab

The origin of the painted textile in this dress is uncertain although the quality of the hand-painting indicates a professional hand. Originally reflective metallic elements were glued to the fabric to add to the evening's sparkle. Modern gold metallic ribbon, foil, sequins and paillettes were applied to the areas of loss following the outlines of the original glue.
