Manchu Official's Semi-formal Robe
China, late Qing dynasty, ca. 1900
Blue silk tapestry (kesi) woven with multicolored threads. Garments in this section are known as "dragon robes," and are covered with both Buddhist and Taoist symbols. The dragon is the most powerful of the mythical beasts. It stands as a symbol of imperial authority and is a personification of the great forces of nature.
