Man's Semi-formal Rank Robe
China, ca. 1900
Navy silk jacquard with large roundels of dragons. Badges of rank were worn by Mandarin military and civil officials. Badges for military officials, chosen by their level of bravery, depicted animals and mythical beasts. The Manchurian crane was the symbol for the first rank of civil official and a Qi lin (mythical animal) was the symbol for the first rank of military official.
