The Possibilities of Pleats

One of Miyake’s most popular ongoing collections, “Pleats Please”, is a prime example of his innovative, yet essentially eastern, approach.  Begun in 1989, it has moved beyond novelty to achieve a visual poetry of motion.  The technical means to make a pleated fabric that breaks into sharp creases was only the beginning of the adventure.  In the time-honored Japanese way, Miyake is still attuned to his medium and exploring its possibilities.  The results defy gender, age and stereotypical body shapes, as did the kimono. They embody volume, movement and freedom.
