Layers of clothing worn by an 1840s doll
  

  
China doll with red dress

United States of America, c.1840-50
Cloth body with china head and leather hands. The doll is wearing a linsey-woolsey red dress with blue, brown and teal floral motifs. The sleeves are trimmed with lace and olive colored rickrack. The bodice has a bateau neckline and closes at the back with buttons. The underpinnings include a cotton and a wool flannel petticoat, a cotton sleeveless bodice, drawers, socks and leather boots.
