The lace on the wide collar and cuffs represented in this painting is most probably a Flemish bobbin lace with a dense pattern of floral sprigs and a straight edge. The straight edge developed by the mid-1650s, just at the time of this painting. The pattern of the lace was influenced by the patterns of the woven silks of the time.

This painting has just been cleaned at the Intermuseum Conservation Association in Cleveland. As a result, the lace is considerably brighter and the pattern is more visible. The Kent State University Museum welcomes financial support to conserve the paintings in the collection.
