Portrait of a Young Gentleman Italy, 1760-80 Oil on canvas Silverman/Rodgers Collection KSUM 1983.004.0715 33 ½" x 27 ¾" unframed |

Portrait of a young gentleman dressed in a dark wool justaucorps coat with double-breasted closures and silver etched buttons. A pink vest, or waistcoat, with similar closure and silver thread-covered buttons is decorated with silver metal lace. A fine white muslin shirt is also seen at the neck and wrists. The fashionable "tye" powdered wig with several rows of tight side curls is worn with a black ribbon that holds his hair back in a bag. This style of wig replaced the periwig in fashionable circles by the second third of the 18th century. Conservative individuals nevertheless retained the older periwig style, which was fossilized in the attire of such professionals as Britain's High Court Judges who wear them to this day.
