Blue Silk Damask Open Robe (robe à l'Anglaise)
with Petticoat and Slippers in Vertically Striped
Pink and White Silk Brocade with Floral Sprays
Unknown maker, gown from Connecticut, originally made
in or before 1756 and altered ca. 1780s-early 1790s.
Made of Spitalfields silk damask, London, England, mid 1750s.
Worn by Susannah Smith at her marriage to
Brigadier General John Douglas in 1756.
Petticoat and slippers of vertically striped pink
and white silk brocade with floral sprays,
unknown maker and place of origin, ca. 1780s-early 1790s.
Possibly made of European fabric, ca. 1780s.
The ensemble was possibly worn in the Northwest Territory
within the Connecticut Western Reserve.
