Research Appointment Policy
Kent State University Museum
March 10, 2005
|
| The
Kent State University Museum is an important resource for
researchers and students. The Museum, its collections and
the Museum Library are important resources available for
students to further augment their studies in the classroom.
While
students usually are introduced to our collection through
a classroom appointment arranged by the instructor, we
would like to encourage students to visit our galleries
frequently. On a limited basis, we are also able to make
individual appointments with students and researchers
to view specific designer or period garments, textiles,
furniture pieces and other types of art work in our collection.
Rules
Governing Use:
1-
Artifacts, books and periodicals from the Kent State University
Museum (KSUM)
do not circulate.
2- Only a limited number of objects will be viewed at
one time (see "ARTIFACTS"
section below).
3- Storage areas are only accessible to staff members.
Staff members will retrieve all
materials requested.
4- Food, candy, gum, drink and smoking are prohibited
when working with the collections.
5- Use pencils only. NO PEN, MARKER, CHARCOAL,
PASTEL or PAINT.
6- Archival gloves (provided) must be worn by anyone handling

their photographs will be for personal

TIME
- Appointments
must be made at least two weeks ahead of time and will
be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
- One
to two hour appointments are standard procedure unless
out-of-town researchers petition for an extension.
ARTIFACTS
- Groups:
estimate that a maximum of 12 artifacts can be
viewed per hour in a group setting. The instructor is
expected to teach the class during the appointment.
However, if the instructor desires a Kent State University
Museum (KSUM) staff member to participate in the discussion
on chosen artifacts, please indicate this at the time
the appointment is made. Appointments must be made at
least two weeks in advance and, a week prior to the
class, the instructor should come to the Museum and
review the garment selection. This will allow time for
the instructor to interpret the selection for the class
and make any changes if necessary.
- Individuals:
estimate that a maximum of 5 artifacts can be
observed in detail per hour. In depth studies of artifacts
can include sketching, color matching, observation of
construction and finishing techniques. If the researcher
desires the help of a KSUM staff member to discuss textile
structure, construction techniques, and historical or
aesthetic significance, please indicate this at the
time the appointment is made.
ATTENDENCE
- The
Research Laboratory is located in the basement of the
KSUM and can be accessed only with the help a KSUM staff
member. Late arrivals are hard to accommodate for this
reason.
- Students
who miss a class presentation at the KSUM cannot request
that artifacts be pulled from the collection at a later
time.
HANDLING
- A
KSUM staff member is responsible for the handling of
all artifacts. Without permission and instruction from
the KSUM staff member, faculty, students and researchers
are not allowed to handle artifacts.

| To
help KSUM staff members meet the needs of students and other
researchers, please be as precise as you can regarding the
types of artifacts sought. Consulting the Museum's Web site
(www.kent.edu/museum) and its Dictionary of Fashion can
help articulate those needs. Please fill out this form before
making an appointment and be prepared to show your I.D.
when arriving at the Museum.
